Hiring freezes are public news in most companies within a week. Candidates will read the signals; denial in your rejection email won't help. Be matter-of-fact.
Avoid promising a timeline you can't commit to. 'We expect to restart hiring in Q3' becomes a broken promise if the freeze extends. 'We'll reach out if and when we're hiring again' is safe and honest.
Considerations
- Do not speculate about restart timelines you don't control.
- Release the candidate to pursue other opportunities without guilt.
- If the freeze is public, you can reference it briefly — don't try to hide what's already known.
- Update your careers page so applications stop arriving into a closed pipeline.
